Excalibur: The Cross-Time Caper review

The Cross-Time Caper (Book 2)

The Cross-Time Caper (Book 2)

Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

Well, that’s not fair. It’s not like this is horrible, it just outstays it’s welcome a tad long. The Cross-Time Caper focuses on Excalibur, having accidentally discovered that by using Phoenix to power Widget they can travel to alternate dimensions.

They then proceed to do so.

That’s it.

It’s very much like “Sliders” except without the magic of John Rys-Davis and starring Excalibur. Come to think of it, John Rys-Davis would make a pretty kick-ass Captain Britain. We’ll never know.

The issue with this story is that it becomes stale VERY quickly. The characters lose any agency or active-nature and keep getting swung from reality to reality on the whim of the author, to the point that it stops making any sense.

Here’s a tip: if the characters want to control the teleportation, keep Phoenix the fuck away from Widget. This seems like a precaution any five-year-old could figure out, yet Excalibur cannot.

A note to authors out there: alternate realities beg to be used for character exploration and dissection. Wacky adventures are fine, but lose their place after 10+ chapters.

Sadly, more of what I’d originally expected when I got into Excalibur.
