So this is it, the 12th issue of IDW’s TMNT. It’s become fairly standard in comics for the 12th issue to be a big year-ender, and this one really doesn’t disappoint. Right from the cover (at least the cover I have, the one on the left) playing homage to Mirage’s Ninja Turtles #1, you know what you’re getting: a big, epic battle between the Shredder and the Turtles.
As big, issue-long battles go, this one is all right. We finally get confirmation that the scar-faced ninja from the Leonardo Micro-Series was the Shredder, and I think Leonardo was the only one really surprised. But this time Leo’s prepared: he’s got his brothers with him, and there’s a great moment as they team up to beat the Shredder… and then leave him with a warning.
And that’s kind of a problem. I mean, the Turtles always killed in the Mirage series. Never without reason, but they did. Not dealing with the Shredder on a permanent basis is going to be a problem, and not one that’s going to be easily solved any time soon. I know the Mirage series, via Return to New York and City at War, eventually showed that the Turtles’s choice to kill the Shredder was not a smart move, but they shouldn’t know that yet.
Still, the issue ends with the best possible news: no more Dan Duncan on art duties. 😉
