A Defense: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3

20120615-150816.jpg Just so we’re clear, this comic is horrible. Very horrible. One of the worst I’ve ever read. I got it in a shipment of issues I was missing and had high hopes, as the other adaptations were good… But this one is horrible. How did they mess up an adaptation of such a great movie?

Yeah, you read that right. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3 is awesome. It’s honestly one of my favorite movies, and I really don’t understand people’s beef with it. It seems like every Internet reviewer has taken their shot at it lately, and often I think they’re just making stuff up to be unfair.

When I was little this was the only Turtles movie we owned, and I watched the hell out of it because I love the Turtles. I have become a student of this movie. And I understand it’s true awesomeness.

I think it features some great characterization of Raphael and Michelangelo. These two grow over the course of the film and stray away from their hothead/partyer roots. I also enjoyed Leonardo in this film. It seems that only Don got the short end of the stick (pun intended), but someone had to.

I hear people talk about the costumes. I had no issue with the costumes. They look good. The lighting is better… Maybe not as realistic, but I can see what is happening at least. Splinter’s puppet is bad, but other than that I have no complaints.

Casey’s back too, which is awesome. And finally: no Shredder!!

This is the part I’m aware people don’t like, but I’m fine with it. It was getting old. All the other media adaptations were trying not to fall into the same rut as the Fred Wolf cartoon, and I respect them for it.

This issue is closer to one of the wacky adventures from the Mirage series. Renet’s time travel adventures jump to mind: hell, that’s her scepter being used! This story seems loosely based on TMNT vol1 #46-47. And I think they did a great job. Would I have liked Savanti Romero? Sure. But Noranaga will do fine.

Honestly my only gripe is that this ended the franchise (for a time at least). I would have loved a fourth movie that got us back on track with City at War or something of the like.

Great movie.
